Hump Daaaay

Hump Day

Perhaps you remember the greatest television advertisement of 2013: the Geico Hump Day commercial.

In the ad, a camel walks around a workplace asking people what day it is. (The people may be his coworkers. It’s unclear. The camel is not wearing a tie.) When he finally gets an answer (Hump Day), he lets out a “woo woooooo,” the Geico guys tell us that people who switch to their insurance are happier than a camel on Wednesday, and everyone buys Geico car insurance.

If you haven’t seen this commercial, you probably didn’t own a television or a computer in 2013 because it was on ALL THE TIME, which is actually OK because it was great. Anyways, my wife, Deserae, loved the camel, and one of her (our) favorite things to do quickly became shouting “HUMP DAAAAAY” on Wednesday.

Deserae also discovered the best way to take this bit to the next level is finding someone named Mike, and saying “MikeMikeMike, guess what day it is?!” like the camel in the commercial before letting out a satisfying “HUMP DAAAAAAY!” whether it’s actually Wednesday or not.

It truly is fantastic.

So you can imagine her delight when she found herself walking down a long hallway at her work several months ago toward a Mike that she hadn’t MikeMikeMiked yet ON AN ACTUAL WEDNESDAY. When she got close enough, she let it fly.

“MikeMikeMike, guess what day it is?!”

A slightly confused and despondent Mike responded, “9/11?”

Mike was right.

Deserae had not considered that this was, in fact, the anniversary of a national tragedy. Deserae is very sensitive toward this kind of thing, and if this were a lesser opportunity, she may have let it drop right there and backed away. But this was a MIKE on HUMP DAY, flags at half mast or not. So after a half second of deliberation, Deserae forged ahead.

“HUMP DAAAAAY!”

Mike had not seen the commercial.

LIFE LESSON #10

Don’t ask the question if you don’t want to know the answer.
